On 11 November the Flanders Opera Children’s Chorus will be appearing on Canvas in a broadcast of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem.

An Indictment of War

Benjamin Britten wrote his War Requiem in 1962 as an indictment of the madness of war. The occasion was the consecration of the new cathedral in Coventry, the old one having been completely destroyed in World War Two. The War Requiem is one of the greatest masterpieces of the twentieth century, and the Children’s Chorus plays the part of a sort of heavenly voice.

Broadcast on Canvas

The performance that Canvas is broadcasting is by deFilharmonie, the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus and the soloists Emma Bell (soprano), Alan Oke (tenor) and Florian Boesch (bass). The musical director is an expert in contemporary music: Martyn Brabbins. At the Flanders Opera he has previously conducted Rumor, a new creation, and Alban Berg’s Wozzeck.
