Intro
Ruthless and lusting for power, Agrippina is determined to put her son Nero on the throne, at the expense of the reigning Emperor Claudius. The love of two men for the gorgeous but unavailable Poppea gives her a perfect opportunity to play them off against one another. The network of intrigue that unfolds is nothing less than a soap opera set in ancient Rome.
The 25-year-old Handel composed Agrippina in just 3 weeks. The success that followed was his passport to London. Following Giasone, this baroque opera is once again right up Mariame Clement’s street. With a satirical wink she takes you to the TV studios of Dallas and Dynasty, the iconic soap operas of the '80s.
Coproduction with ópera de Oviedo
Language: Italian. Surtitles: Dutch.
Tickets from € 11.00 to € 100.00
Team
Baroque specialist Paul McCreesh is a master of historical performance practice. Together with her regular set designer Julia Hansen, Mariame Clemént sets out on her third adventure at the Flanders Opera, following the successes of Giasone and the humorous Il viaggio a Reims. Ann Hallenberg, who received acclaim for Werther and Semiramide, plays the title role. Elena Tsallagova is a perfect Poppea. She (with her ‘brilliant voice’, as De Volkskrant called it) starred in Il viaggio a Reims as the hysterical Contessa di Folleville.
