Beyond the fairytale

In the most frequently performed opera in the world we see two opposing realms. That of light and the land, represented by Sarastro, and that of the dark underwater world of the Queen of the Night. They struggle for power and for Pamina, the Queen’s daughter. Prince Tamino is in love with Pamina and decides to save her. It proves to be a dramatic ordeal for both.

The up-and-coming German director David Hermann presents a raw version of an opera everyone thinks they know. The fairytale, which is anything but light-hearted, is translated into a contemporary reading of a world out of balance. A stark contrast to Mozart’s enchanting music.

Team

A young team has gathered for this production of The Magic Flute. David Hermann promises a fresh but bold approach to Mozart's final and most famous opera. The promising Czech conductor Tomáš Netopil is making a return to the Flanders Opera following Samson et Dalila. Olga Pudova of the legendary Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg plays the role of the Queen of the Night. Mozart specialist Rainer Trost plays Tamino, with the warm timbre of Robin Johannsen as Pamina at his side. Audience favourite Josef Wagner is Papageno.
