Recently, the New York director David Alden won a special award for his idiosyncratic work in the Munich Opera. He directed there a.o. L'incoronazione di Poppea, Il Ritorno di Ulisse in Patria, Tannhäuser, Rinaldo and Pikovaia Dama.
In many European opera houses David Alden’s works were to be seen: Wozzeck and Rigoletto (Scottish Opera), Il prigioniero by Dallapiccola and Der Zwerg by Zemlinsky (The Dutch Opera), Les Contes d'Hoffmann and La Bohème (New Israeli Opera), Simon Boccanegra, Un Ballo in Maschera and Mazeppa (English National Opera) and a new production of Thomas Adès Powder her Face (Aldeburgh Festival). In his homeland America he is also a welcome guest. With several major opera houses and festivals, he built a special band: Macbeth and The Makropoulos Case at Lyric Opera in Chicago, Wozzeck and Fidelio at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Katia Kabanova and Macbeth in Houston Grand Opera and Turn of the Screw and an American premiere of Judith by Siegfried Matthus at the festival of Santa Fe. David Alden also worked on film projects including the BBC and directed a world tour for the Pet Shop Boys.
David Alden has directed this season Johann Simon Mayr's Medea in Corinto for Theater St. Gallen and Handel's Ariodante in the Opera of Oviedo in Spain. He directed two productions this season for the English National Opera: Lucia di Lammermoor and Janacek's Katia Kabanova. For his production of Peter Grimes (last season premiere at the English National Opera) David Alden won the prestigious South Bank Show Award.
