Georg Friedrich Händel wrote about forty Italian operas for the London theatres. Among them, "Ariodante" is definitely a masterpiece, even though the reputation of this musical drama set in medieval Scotland was long overshadowed by his better-known operas "Alcina", "Serse" and "Rinaldo". As in "Orlando", Ariosto’s famous epic "Orlando furioso" was the source of inspiration. With a direct narration that is most unusual for Händel, this drama with its happy end contains a wealth of melodious arias and emotional expression.
