Intro
Of the three operas for which Mozart collaborated with da Ponte, "‘Così fan tutte" is probably the most ambiguous. What presents itself as a light-hearted comedy is really a sober analysis of human limitations and deceit. 'Così fan tutte le belle’ (‘That is what all beautiful women do’) was the original phrase uttered by Basilio in "Le Nozze di Figaro". But Mozart and his librettist certainly did not aim only at women. After a long series of complications, both man and woman have to admit that they had better be a bit more careful in their illusions of fidelity in love.
