Intro
Mozart’s Il dissoluto punito ossia Il Don Giovanni — ‘The Rake Punished, or Don Giovanni’ — lends the theatrical character who was highly popular in the 18th century mythical and archetypal proportions. Here, the amusing libertine of the innumerable Don Juan farces is a disquieting anarchist who chooses to rush to perdition rather than give up a life full of lust and pleasure. But not only the title role gets unprecedented dimensions. The portraits of Don Giovanni’s many victims and the tone of the drama testify to the great ambitions of Mozart and Da Ponte. They clearly wanted to transcend the traditional framework of the opera buffa. The inventive and contagious production of Achim Freyer, who drew inspiration from the commedia dell’arte, takes us back to the roots of Mozart’s dramma giocoso: a mixture of a moralising play, a convoluted comedy and baroque world theatre.
