‘This opera will win me a martyr’s crown’, wrote Beethoven about "Fidelio". The difficulties encountered by the main opera characters on their way to freedom was matched by the problems the composer had to overcome to create his only work in this genre. Inspired by Mozart’s glorification of high ideals in "Die Zauberflöte" and by the so-called ‘rescue operas’ of the time, in which Cherubini excelled, Beethoven made it into a poignant ode to love and freedom of which the tone already foreshadows that other ode from the Ninth Symphony.
