With his first work for the opera stage, Engelbert Humperdinck started off a tradition of fairytale operas in German. Based on the famous story by the Grimm brothers, "Hänsel und Gretel" stands midway between the simplicity of the folksong and the orchestral drama of Wagner. Richard Strauss was so enchanted by this little gem that he insisted on directing the world creation, and did. The production by Andreas Homoki gives this marvellous opera, which is certainly not intended only for children, a modern touch.
