Several of Giuseppe Verdi's operas drew inspiration from Spanish culture. Based on the chivalric drama "El Trovador" by Antonio Garcia Gutiérrez, "Il Trovatore", together with "Rigoletto" and "La Traviata", forms what is known as Verdi's 'trilogia popolar'. Using a kaleidoscopic sequence of richly imaginative scenes, Verdi tells the story of two rival lovers who in the end turn out to be brothers. The mixture of personal conflicts with social and political tensions in this dark and fateful drama heralds the many-layered dramas of "Don Carlo" and "Otello".
