Rossini's "La Cenerentola" may be regarded as one of the best examples of the opera buffa genre.
Here the age-old story of Cinderella emerges as a biting satire on conventional middle-class thinking. The fairy godmother is now Alidoro, philosopher and advisor to the prince, and the wicked stepmother is an impoverished, scheming nobleman.
Convinced that the power of music lies in its rhythm, Rossini created the perfect marriage between dramatic momentum and bel canto.
