The life and work of Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann could only yield a kaleidoscopic and fantastic opera. In Offenbach’s opera, various stories by the German Romantic writer and composer are woven together, so that their bizarre characters meet and mingle. Hoffmann is enchanted by the opera singer Stella, who has the characteristics of three women from his stories: young girl, artist and courtesan. But Nicklausse, Hoffmann’s companion and muse, sees to it that the writer does not lose sight of his art.
