The heroïcal epos "Orlando Furioso" by Ariosto, in which the main character goes down because of his love for the sorceress Angelica, inspired Händel to write one of his most intense opera's. He used the traditional elements of an Italian baroque opera in an innovative manner. Orlando's madness scene is a masterly example of suggestive musical theatre with a musical expression that surpasses the common operaforms by far.
