Using "Parzival" by Wolfram von Eschenbach as a guideline, Richard Wagner became deeply interested in the rich tradition of Celtic legends and tales. The central idea is that of 'knowledge through compassion'.
The hero, who also plays the title role, undergoes various stages of an initiation process before finally becoming aware of the task he must perform in order to find redemption. Wagner's "Bühnenweihfestspiel" could be seen as a metaphor for Gurnemanz' pronouncement, “Time here becomes space” ('Zum Raum wird hier die Zeit').
