Intro
Richard III was the first political criminal, before Macbeth, whom Shakespeare chose to portray as a tragic hero. The hunchbacked king is fascinated by his own inability to feel any sympathy for his victims. On his merciless ascent to the throne, he eliminates everyone who would stand in his way.
Dramaturg and author Ian Burton pared down this historical drama to a powerful libretto that is a study of the tactics of fear and cruelty. Giorgio Battistelli, one of Italy’s most acclaimed living composers, who has a lot of experience with music theatre, has always had a special interest in the legends surrounding Richard III. This dramma per musica was especially commissioned by De Vlaamse Opera. As a successor to Dallapiccola, Nono, and Berio, Battistelli brings a fascinating synthesis of avant-garde and tradition, close-knit construction and intuition.
