Wagner versus Nietzsche: a fatal friendship

In 2013, it will be 200 years since Richard Wagner was born: an ideal time to turn the spotlight on this legendary composer. The Flanders Opera invited Jan Fabre to make a musical theatre creation on the subject of Wagner, who is one of his favourite artistic figures. He was inspired by Wagner's 13 operas and the fascinating but tragic association between Wagner and Nietzsche, which ended in a feud. In collaboration with the writer and Nietzsche expert Stefan Hertmans and the German composer Moritz Eggert, the result is an exciting new work of theatre.

Coproductio,: Troubleyn/Jan Fabre, Concertgebouw Brugge, Théâtre de la Ville Paris, Opéra de Lille, Wagner Genèva Festival & Holland Festival.

Team

Jan Fabre needs little introduction as he is an established name both at home and abroad. In Tragedy of a Friendship he combines theatre and dance. Composer Moritz Eggert is as versatile as Fabre. He has composed music for ballets and operas, but also for the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Germany. Finally, there is Stefan Hertmans, the highly acclaimed Flemish poet who regularly writes essays of cultural criticism.
