In his novel Satyricon, Petronius paints a merciless picture of the parvenus that swarmed around Emperor Nero. Bruno Maderna, the late godfather of the Italian avant-garde, took the ‘Banquet of Trimalchio’, the best-known fragment from this novel, as the source for his opera: a magnificent panorama of avarice, megalomania and human stupidity. He gave the orgy described in detail by Petronius an inventive and colourful score, studded with quotations from many sources, ranging from Gregorian chant to musical.
