As a double bill the productions of 'Venus and Adonis' and 'Dido and
Aeneas' show remarkable parallels. These works by John Blow and Henry
Purcell are not only the first fully-fledged English operas, but are
also musically linked, with Purcell clearly being inspired by the work
of his tutor, Blow. Venus and Dido are tales of doomed love in a
pastoral setting. Both scores contain moving laments, brilliant choral
passages and exhilarating dance music.
