Ariadne auf Naxos is undoubtedly one of the most original creations produced by the collaboration between Richard Strauss and librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal. This sophisticated opera, in which the leitmotif is the myth of Ariadne who is abandoned on the island of Naxos, is a piece of theatre-in-the-theatre. A nouveau riche wants to treat his guests to an opera. To the dismay of both the opera singers and the composer, he wants it to be followed by a piece of commedia dell’arte. After much ado, he decides that the opera seria and the opera buffa will be performed simultaneously. The confrontation between Ariadne, who is mourning her lost lover, and the playful Zerbinetta, who takes a light-hearted view of life and love, personifies the contrast between tragedy and comedy, but also provides the framework for reflections on artistic integrity and the absolute versus the relative. In Ariadne auf Naxos, art and life are one.
