From the season 2002-2003 on, Ivan Törzs will be the new principal conductor of Flanders Opera in Belgium. This American conductor is actually working in the opera house of Schwerin (Germany) as music director and artistic director, a position he took in 1993.
He was responsible for various productions, such as Tosca, Jenufa, Der Rosenkavalier and Tristan und Isolde. German journalists wrote that under his baton ‘the Schwerin Opera is again approaching the great era in which Klaus Tennstedt or Kurt Masur led the orchestra’. Ivan Törzs was also invited as guest conductor in opera houses such as the State Opera in Vienna, Hamburg, Prague, Stuttgart and various American houses. He collaborated with Renato Scotto, Cheryl Studer and Grace Bumbry and, when not busy in the pit, accompanies artists like Kurt Moll, Edda Moser and Theo Adam on the piano. In the Flanders Opera he already conducted a new production of The Queen of Spades with Rita Gorr as Countess, as well as a concert that featured the Wesendonck Lieder with Violeta Urmana.
