Love and rebellion in Flanders

Le Duc d’Albe takes place at the start of the rebellion against Spanish rule. The Spanish dominate public life in Brussels and the Duke of Alba has just had Count of Egmont executed. Daughter Hélène wants to avenge her father and joins the rebellion, where she receives the support of her lover: the young Henri de Bruges. But he unwittingly turns out to be Alba's son... Donizetti composed Le Duc d’Albe for the Opera of Paris, but never finished it. Now, in 2012, Italian composer Giorgio Battistelli has finished it. An old opera with a new end result! And this opera production will also be boosted by the fact that the costumes will be designed by renowned Belgian fashion duo A.F. Vandevorst.

In the press

  • 15 May 2012 - The New York Times

“The baritone George Petean looks appropriately thuggish with his shaved, tattooed head and cream-colored suit (costumes by A.F. Vandevorst), but sings incisively and conveys the duke’s emotional attachment to Henri. The prima donna Stoltz may have been right about the character of Hélène — revenge is her unremitting motivation, yet Rachel Harnisch sings with a gleaming soprano and thorough involvement. Ismael Jordi brings a strong tenor voice to Henri’s music, though his tone is sometimes overly penetrating; included is the familiar aria “Anges des cieux” (known in Italian translation as “Spirto gentil”). Paolo Carignani conducts with thorough professionalism.”
