Of all the operas based on Goethe's Faust, Arrigi Boito's "Mefistofele"
is most faithful to the original. It covers the entire breadth of
Goethe's magnum opus, extending from Easter morning in Frankfurt to
Faust's meeting with Helena in ancient Greece, and on to the scholar's
heavenly vision.
Mefistofele, the diabolic character who is supposed to quench Faust's
spiritual thirst, plays a central part in all this. Italian bel canto
and Wagnerian drama make "Mefistofele" an ambitious literary opera
avant la lettre.
