Around 1920, Stravinsky, like Darius Milhaud and Arthur Honegger, became fascinated by a new interpretation of ancient narrative material.
Sophocles’ tragedy about human pride and disbelief was transformed into a scenic ritual of monumental proportions. This is further reinforced through the use of a dead language, Latin, as well as numerous references to contemporary music ranging from Händel to Verdi.
Stravinsky’s opera oratorium reduces the story to its essence, and underlines in particular the allegorical element in Oedipus’ search for truth.
In Joosten’s staging this ‘drama of purification’ becomes a protest against aggression.
