After "Yevgeny Onegin", "Pikovaya Dama", also known as "The Queen of Spades", is Tchaikovsky's most famous and successful opera.
The composer was fascinated with Pushkin's short story of the same name, about the impoverished officer Herman, who tries to buy love and status through card-playing before it finally becomes his own undoing.
Set in eighteenth-century St. Petersburg, Tchaikovsky's work, with its endless stylistic references, pays tribute to the age of his idol, Mozart.
