In his famous aria "La donna è mobile", the Duke of Mantua is probably
referring more to his own unpredictability than the supposed fickleness
of women.
Since the censors of Verdi's day would not accept that the profligate
ruler François I from Victor Hugo's play could become a theatrical
figure, his jester became the pivot around which the action takes place.
"Rigoletto", one of Verdi's most popular operas, is a masterly
combination of rich melody and psychologically accurate portrayal.
