"Tristan und Isolde" is the fulfilment of romantic ecstasy as well as the transition to the new sounds of Expressionism.

Tristan and Isolde wish for perfect fusion of their love with the cosmos. The composer realised that the passionate tone of the libretto, which he himself had written, needed music with a distinct symphonic style. The opera is not only a glorification of love, but is also an ode to the magical power of music.
