In a similar vein to Verdi, Puccini reveals an incredible love for renewal at the end of his life. Turandot, in this sense, is very much the crowning achievement of his oeuvre. The opera, completed posthumously by Franco Alfano, represents a break with the naturalism of Puccini’s earlier operas and employs the archetypical symbolism of the fairytale.

The Chinese princess, Turandot will only marry the man who can solve three riddles. Calaf, son of the abdicated Tartar King Timur discovers the answers with little effort. Nevertheless, Turandot attempts to get out of her promise.

Director Robert Carsen’s Turandot is a woman who has difficulty having a mature relationship with a man. The production thus succeeds in transcending the exotic framework of the plot, allowing the opera to evolve into a psychological drama in which the power of the people plays a central role.
