Biography

Education
Violin and composition at the Jerusalem Music Academy.
Recommended at the Conservatoire National Supérier in Paris by Leonard Bernstein. Studied with Louis Fourestier (conducting), Olivier Messiaen and Nadia Boulanger.

Career
Honorary conductor of the Orchestra Nazionale della RAI in Turin (1995- 2001) and the RSO Frankfurt (now).
Principal conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (2001-2005), of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice (1984-1987 & 2007).
Director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (2008), the Czech Philharmonic (2009)

Highlights
Guest conductor of: the WDR Symphony Orchestra for the yearly Bruckner Cycle at the Rheingau Music Festival; the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam for the Mahler Festival; for three concerts at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig (2010); the Orchestre National de Lyon in a performance of Liszt’s Faust Symphony.

Prizes
First prize in the Cantelli Conducting Competition at the age of 26.
Italian critic’s prize Premio Abbiati and the Premio Viotti.
Named ‘Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters’ by the French government, 1990.
Golden Medal for Merit from the city of Vienna, 2001; Goethe Badge of Honour from the City of Frankfurt; Order of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany, 2006.

Recordings
The complete symphonic works of Berlioz, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, Ravel, Schumann, Schostakovich, Skriabin, Stravinsky, Richard Strauss, and the Second Vienna School. Many of his recordings have been awarded prizes, such as the Deutschen Schallplattenpreis, the Grand Prix du Disque, and the Prix Caecilia.
