Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz makes opera debut in Antwerp

Two time Academy Award-winner Christoph Waltz will make his debut as an opera director with Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier. The world premiere will take place at Flanders Opera in Antwerp, as Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reports today. Flanders Opera hereby confirms the news.

Austrian actor Christoph Waltz became instantly world-famous with his parts in the Quentin Tarantino films Inglorious Basterds and, more recently, Django Unchained –both of which earned him an Academy Award – as well as other films including Polanski’s Carnage. Next season he will make his debut as an opera director with Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier. This marks a singled out return of Waltz to the theatre-stage, where he has known major successes before starting his international film career.

The world premiere of this new production will take place at Flanders Opera in Antwerp on Sunday 15th of December 2013 and will later be staged at the co-producing opera houses Le Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London.

Christoph Waltz is hereby following in the footsteps of filmmaker Terry Gilliam, who made his opera-directing debut with La Damnation de Faust, shown at Flanders Opera earlier this season.

Richard Strauss composed this grand and elegant masterpiece based on a libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, one of the most celebrated Austrian playwrights. Der Rosenkavalier is a bittersweet opera about love, romance and intrigues in the Vienna of Empress Maria Theresia.

More information about this production will follow on 24th of April, when the Flanders Opera announces its programme for the new season.
