Following hisstaging of Scènes uit een huwelijk (Scenes from a Marriage) and Kreten en gefluister(Cries and Whispers), Ivo van Hove will once again direct two works by Ingmar Bergman: two performances on one evening.
Na de repetitie (After the Rehearsal) is a play about the meaning of theatre. For the director the theatre is his life. His productions are his autobiography. He lives in and through the theatre.
InPersona, we see how a top actress abruptly breaks off a scene and then refuses to speak. She is taken to hospital. The actress sees her life asempty and meaningless. A nurse tries to give her back her zest for life. Deep inside, however, they feel the same dissatisfaction.
Both works examine the meaning of art in our lives in a human way. Both candidly and lovingly.
