With this Idomeneo, Mozart follows in the footsteps of Gluck’s reform of the Italian opera seria. The contemplative nature of the serious Baroque opera makes places for music drama full of action and momentum, with arias and recitatives joined seamlessly together and with the chorus in a dominant role. The Trojan War is the background for this story in which a father has to sacrifice his son for the good of the community. Mozart supported Idomeneo’s inner struggle between his duties as father and as king with a brilliant symphonic score full of bold harmonies.
